Enjoy The Kings Garden Next To Rosenborg Castle
The Kings Garden (Kongens Have), also known as Kings Park, is the oldest royal garden in Denmark, dating back to the 1600s. The Renaissance-style gardens in the park were initially landscaped during the reign of King Christian IV.
When the flowers bloom, the rose garden looks and smells beautiful. And there are many statues scattered around the park that have been there for over 400 years.
The Kings Garden is one of several places in the city centre where you can see the Sakura (cherry blossom) trees flower in the spring. For more information about where to see the best cherry blossoms and the Sakura festival, check out this article: The Best Places To See Cherry Blossom In Copenhagen.
Rosenborg Castle is located within The Kings Garden, and the park is an excellent place to see and take photos of the castle and moat.
The Royal Life Guard barracks are located next to Rosenborg Castle, and there’s a good chance you’ll hear the band practising as you wander around the park. While there’s no public entry to the barracks, you can get a good view of the band from the grounds of Rosenborg Castle.
There are toilets inside The Kings Garden, close to the Hercules Pavilion Cafe.

Discover The Beauty Of Copenhagen Botanical Garden
Copenhagen Botanical Garden (Kobenhavn Botanisk Have) has been in its current location since 1870. The landscaped gardens, which contain Denmark’s biggest collection of living plants, are the perfect place to rest and take a small break, whether you are interested in plants or not.
The gardens have plenty of seats dotted around, so pick your spot, relax and enjoy. It’s also a good place for people-watching.
And despite being in the city centre, you’ll likely see plenty of birds, ducks and squirrels.
Visiting the Botanical Garden is free, but there is an admission fee for the Palm House, which includes access to the Butterfly House, home to many Central American butterflies
The Palm House is a great place to visit on a cold day. It’s full of tropical plants, and the temperature is hot and humid. Top tip: wear layers; it can get really hot inside.
A large part of the Palm House (the middle section with the large class dome, spiral staircase and overhead walkway) will be closed to visitors from the 6th of May 2025 until January 2026 due to renovation. However, other sections of the Palm House, including the Butterfly House, will remain open.

Enjoy A Picnic At Ørsted Park Close To Torvehallerne Food Hall
Ørsted Park (Ørstedparken) is a pleasant, peaceful place to visit and, like Østre Anlæg Park, is laid out on the city’s former ramparts. The lake in the middle of Ørsted Park used to be part of the moat.
If you look at a map of Copenhagen city centre, you can trace a semi-circle of the old city ramparts from Østre Anlæg Park, passing through the Botanical Garden, Ørsted Park and Tivoli Gardens.
Ørsted Park was built to commemorate two brothers, the scientist Hans Christian Ørsted and Anders Sandøe Ørsted, Denmark’s prime minister from 1842. There are statues of both brothers in the park.
There are plenty of seats around the lake, and on a sunny day, it’s a good place for a picnic.

While not technically a park, Kastellet is a beautiful, open green space in the city that you can visit and enjoy.
At Kastellet, you can wander around the ramparts overlooking the moat. Take a look at Copenhagen’s only remaining windmill. Visit the Monument for Denmark’s International Efforts and visit Kastellet Church.

Experience Bakken, The World’s Oldest Running Amusement Park

Opened in 1583, Bakken is located inside The Deer Park (Dyrehavn). Entry to Bakken is free, but you’ll need to buy a wristband to go on the rides.
It’s worth visiting Bakken to see Rutschebanen, the wooden rollercoaster constructed in 1932. It looks like a museum piece, but it’s still operating, and you’ll hear the screams to prove it.
There are plenty of restaurants and several bars at Bakken, so you won’t go hungry.
It seems incredible that Bakken, an amusement park, is inside a UNESCO forest surrounded by the deer park. But they co-exist together, and it has worked for hundreds of years. You don’t need to walk far to escape the noise of Bakken and enjoy the peace of the deer park.
There are plenty of toilets inside Bakken.

Discover The Birds And Beauty Of Frederiksberg Park
Frederiksberg Park (Frederiksberg Have), dating back to the 1700s and the reign of King Frederik IV, is 4 km (2½ miles) from the city centre, but it’s worth a visit.
The park, a beautiful green space known for its picturesque landscapes and peaceful atmosphere, is home to many birds, and you’re guaranteed to see grey herons and greylag geese with a good chance of spotting common chaffinches, greater spotted woodpeckers, and short-toed treecreepers.
During the spring, grey herons nest on a small island in the park, and you’ll hear them well before you get close to them.
In the summer, you can hire a rowing boat or take a boat tour on the park’s small canal.
And, if you’re lucky, you can spot the elephants in the zoo from the elephant viewpoint at any time of year.
The park has a rich history and is home to a ‘castle’ now a military barracks.
It’s an easy mistake to make, but don’t get Frederiksberg Park and Frederiksborg Castle confused. Frederiksborg Castle is almost 40 km out of the city at Hillerød.
