The Best Places To See Cherry Blossom In Copenhagen

Cherry blossoms mark the start of spring in Copenhagen, and crowds flock to see them. You can spot cherry blossom trees all over the city, but some places are worth making a special effort to see the displays.

Copenhagen’s cherry blossoms are best seen at Langelinie Park and Bispebjerg Cemetery. These two popular locations offer the largest and most impressive displays. In addition, Kings Garden, Tivoli Gardens, Amalie Garden and the Botanical Garden boast equally beautiful cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossoms can be seen all over Copenhagen, and this article would be endless if I listed them all. So, as a local, I have chosen the best places to enjoy the blooms and take selfies and shots for social media. Except for Tivoli Gardens, all locations mentioned here are free to visit.

Enjoy The Cherry Blossom At Langelinie Park

Langelinie Park, close to The Little Mermaid and Kastellet, is a riot of colour when the white and pink cherry blossoms bloom. There are over 200 trees in the park, making it Copenhagen’s largest and best display of cherry blossoms.

Langelinie Park is surrounded by water from the Kastellet moat on one side and the harbour waters on the other. This could be one of the reasons why the cherry blossoms here bloom later than the other trees around Copenhagen.

You can see the cherry blossoms from the water; the canal boat tours pass Langelinie Park, as does the Harbour Bus. But, when the weather is fine, nothing beats a walk in the park to enjoy the blooms up close.

Every year, Langelinie Park hosts a Sakura Festival celebrating the cherry blossoms. The next Sakura Festival will take place on the 20th and 21st of April 2024.

Visit Bispebjerg Cemetery For The Cherry Tree Path

While it might seem strange to visit a cemetery to enjoy the cherry blossom trees, Bispebjerg Cemetery (Bispebjerg Kirkegård) is a perfect place to see the avenue of trees in bloom.

Bispebjerg Cemetery’s Cherry Tree Path (Bispebjerg Kirkegaard Kirsebær Alle) gets 150,000 visitors each year, so don’t expect to be there on your own.

The cemetery opens at 7 am, and when the trees are in bloom, people wait outside the gates to gain entry. But early morning is the quietest time to visit. It can get busy during the day, especially if the sun shines. There are benches around the cherry trees, but don’t sit on the grass.

Visiting a cemetery with friends in Denmark is the same as visiting a park. Check out this Top 10 Best Parks In Copenhagen article to learn more.

While the Cherry Tree Path is lined with pink blossoms, you’ll find plenty of white cherry blossom trees if you wander around the cemetery.

Bispebjerg is a large cemetery, and the Cherry Tree Path is not close to the main gates, so be prepared for a short walk. The paths are paved and suitable for people with mobility issues.

The Cherry Tree Path is signposted from the entrances, so you won’t get lost.

There are free-to-use toilets close to the crematorium at the Frederiksborgvej entrance.

Bispebjerg is a working cemetery, and funerals may take place, so please be respectful. The grassed area around the Cherry Tree Path is still a grave site and is roped off, so don’t walk or sit on the grass.

If you have time after visiting the cherry blossom, it’s worth looking at Grundtvig’s Church, just across the road from the cemetery. It’s a famous, architecturally awe-inspiring church, which would be a shame to miss when you are in the area.

This short video offers a glimpse into the beauty and tranquillity of the unique cherry blossom display at Grundtvig Cemetery.

Enjoy The Cherry Blossoms At Tivoli Gardens

As you would expect, Tivoli Gardens has several cherry blossom trees dotted around the park.

There are several pink blossom trees around Tivoli Lake, the Dragon Boat Ride and the Chinese Pagoda. In addition, you’ll see white cherry blossoms in front of Fru Nimb and Figaro restaurants.

Depending on the weather, some cherry blossoms at Tivoli can still look good at the beginning of May.

Cherry Blossoms At The King’s Garden (Kongens Have)

As you walk through the Gothersgade gate close to the Life Guards Museum entrance, you’ll see some young cherry blossom trees, but you’ll also find several other mature trees dotted around the park.

But King’s Garden’s big draw is the stunning white cherry blossom tree in the middle of the park. It stands alone, in line with Rosenborg Castle and is one of the best-looking cherry blossom trees in Copenhagen.

See The Cherry Blossoms At Amalie Garden (Amaliehaven)

Amalie Garden, created in 1983, is a small park next to Amalienborg Palace, Denmark’s Queen Margarethe II’s winter residence. While Amaliehaven is not so big, it’s a peaceful place to enjoy the cherry blossoms and the view of Copenhagen Opera House across the harbour water.

Cherry Blossoms At Copenhagen Botanical Garden (Botanisk Have)

Copenhagen’s Botanical Garden has two beautiful cherry blossom trees, one pink and one white, which can be seen close to the Nørreport Station / Gothersgade entrance.

While they may not be worth a special visit because they are two colours next to each other, they are worth a look if you are passing.

Visit The Copenhagen Sakura Festival At Langelinie Park

Sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossoms, the national flower of Japan.

Each year, the committee of the Copenhagen Sakura Festival, in conjunction with the Embassy of Japan, hold an annual Sakura (cherry blossom) festival at Langelinie Park.

The next Copenhagen Sakura Festival takes place on the 20th and 21st of April 2024. The festival is open daily from 11 am – 4 pm each day and has free entry.

The festival has entertainment on two stages; the main stage includes martial arts displays, karate, kendo, drum sessions and kimono-wearing. The smaller stage with music and workshops may involve calligraphy, origami and other Japanese arts.

There are plenty of pop-up shops, food stalls, and a tea ceremony at the Sakura Festival. And many people express themselves with cosplay.

If you’d like to learn more about Japanese Sakura, this fascinating book, The Sakura Obsession: The Incredible Story of the Plant Hunter Who Saved Japan’s Cherry Blossoms, is available from Amazon. It tells the true story of an amateur botanist who became one of the world’s leading experts on cherry blossom trees.

The Best Month To See Cherry Blossoms In Copenhagen

Generally speaking, cherry blossoms in Copenhagen begin to bloom from the end of March to the beginning of April. But, of course, there is no fixed time as it depends on the weather and the wind.

The best way to discover when the cherry trees start to flower is to keep your eye on Copenhagen’s local news or Instagram. People flock to cherry blossoms as soon as those photos hit the news.

Cherry blossoms only flower for a few weeks each year, so take advantage of the opportunity to see them as soon as you know they are in bloom.

I hope you have the chance to visit the blooms while in Copenhagen. Nothing beats the cherry blossoms for signalling spring has arrived and for putting a smile on people’s faces.
