Taxis In Copenhagen (How To Get The Best Deal)

When travelling, there are many things to consider, and taking a taxi in a foreign city can catch you off guard. So, before you jump into a cab, there are a few things you need to know. Firstly although Copenhagen taxis are expensive, they are reliable, well-maintained, and clean.

The price of a taxi in Copenhagen depends on many factors. These include day and evening rates, fixed-price rides, ‘door rates’, hourly rates and any additional surcharges for extra luggage, airport fees, carrying a bicycle etc.

Denmark requires taxis to display daytime and evening rates on the cab door. Based on these rates, Taxa 4 x 35 offers the lowest prices. However, it is important to consider surcharges and additional fees, which is why I have included price comparison charts to help you make an informed decision.

How To Ensure A Copenhagen Taxi Is Safe

All official cabs display a four-digit number on the roof or windowscreen; the same number is on the dashboard’s driver’s license plate.

Official cabs must show day and evening rates on the door.

For your safety, never get into an unlicensed taxi.

Danish law requires that seat belts be worn at all times. In addition, neither passengers nor drivers are permitted to smoke or vape inside taxis.

How To Call A Taxi in Copenhagen

Taxis in Copenhagen can be flagged down (hailed) on the street. Available cabs show a green Fri sign in the front window or on the roof.

Taxi ranks are located outside all major tourist attractions, train stations and the airport (although they are not always easy to locate at the stations).

Your hotel will also have the number of their preferred taxi company and will call a cab for you.

Reserve your taxi well in advance for long-distance trips, especially those requiring a larger vehicle.

8 Benefits Of Using A Taxi App For Your Journey

The easiest way to book a cab in Copenhagen is to download an app, which will:-

  • Show the estimated arrival time at your pick-up point.

  • Give the distance and approximate time to your destination.

  • Allow you to add items that may include a surcharge, e.g. a bicycle or excess luggage.

  • Give you the option to pay by the meter or fixed price.

  • Allow you to book instantly.

  • Pay through the app.

  • Receive your receipt via email.

  • Rate your driver at the end of your journey.

Copenhagen Taxi Apps And Contact Details

You can find the iOS and Android apps in the website links, but if you prefer to speak to a person to reserve your taxi, use the phone numbers below.

In my experience, having lived in Copenhagen for many years, the most user-friendly and best taxi app is Dantaxi.

How To Pay For A Taxi In Copenhagen

All prices in this article link to a currency converter to enable you to check the prices in your own currency.

  • Taxis in Copenhagen are metered, and tips and taxes are included in the price.

  • Cash, credit cards and mobile payments can all be used to pay for cab rides. International credit cards are accepted.

  • If you have chosen to use an app to call your cab, you can prepay by selecting the fixed price option or pay using the app at the end of your journey.

  • When paying by cash, be aware the driver won’t be carrying much money. Make sure you have small bills as the driver is only obliged to have enough change to accept up to a 200 kr bill.

  • It’s up to the driver whether or not he accepts dollars or euros as payment. Nevertheless, you will receive your change in Danish Kroner.

  • The taxi driver has the right to request payment before commencing the journey, especially if it’s a long trip.

  • The meter starts running as soon as the taxi arrives at the address for which it has been ordered. If the cab arrives early, the meter starts running at the time it was reserved for.

  • Generally speaking, taxi drivers in Copenhagen are honest, so don’t try and negotiate a lower price “off the meter”.

An example of a daytime ride with Taxa 4 x 35 for three passengers covering 15 km (9.3 miles) in 15 minutes can be calculated as follows –

  • 39 Kr start price

Copenhagen Taxi Surcharges

In a country like Denmark, where cycling is such a large part of everyday life, it’s not surprising that taxi drivers will fix up a bike rack and secure your bicycle to the back of the cab for a small surcharge.

There are also surcharges for child seats, but you should contact the taxi company as not all cars carry them.

Collapsible wheelchairs do not incur a surcharge.
